Hazard to Real Madrid: a deal that looks more and more likely
Eden Hazard is increasingly convinced it's presently or never. Meanwhile, Chelsea colleague Marcos Alonso appears a less direct choice.
Chelsea are a powder keg at this moment. Manager Maurizio Sarri has lost the confidence of the dressing room and, AS has learned, key members of the squad have turned against the Italian. Restricted to Europa League football this season, the Blues' need is to get once again into the Champions League, however they are currently 6th in the Premier League, outside of the European places altogether. Missing out on the continent's best club competition would leave the Londoners needing to offload stars to keep away from Financial Fair Play breaches. Chief among whom is Eden Hazard. Every one of the ingredients are there for the Belgium international to be Real Madrid's marquee marking this summer. With Hazard out of agreement in June 2020, Chelsea will have little alternative yet to listen to offers for him toward the end of the season, while the player has consistently made no secret of his desire to pull on the white shirt at some point in his career. At 28 years of age, it's currently or never. That's the feeling at Madrid, where club chiefs are more and more convinced that Hazard represents the ideal close-season expansion, especially as they may well be forced to plunge into the market if Isco's increasingly untenable circumstance under mentor Santiago Solari at long last leads to the Spaniard's departure. Just like the case when they signed Thibaut Courtois from Chelsea a year ago, the way that Hazard will be heading into the last year of his agreement means Madrid can expect to agree a knockdown price for the forward. Marcos Alonso a less likely alternative for Madrid Marcos Alonso, another Chelsea player being tracked by Madrid, appears a less likely marking. After advancing Theo Hernández to Real Sociedad, the European champions expressed an interest in Alonso the previous summer, yet when then-supervisor Julen Lopetegui put the brakes on the deal, the left-back stayed put and renewed his Chelsea contract until 2023. That makes a deal for Alonso a less clear prospect, as does the emergence of Sergio Reguilón at Madrid. However, he remains very rated at the Bernabéu and could yet home once again into Los Merengues' view if things don't improve at Chelsea...
